[June 22, 2011]  GENEVA (AP) -- A couple in Switzerland have police to thank for their impromptu marriage.

The 32-year-old Swiss man and his 33-year-old Spanish bride turned up for their wedding ceremony in Zurich on Tuesday without the required two witnesses.

Zurich's city police department says the wedding was meant to be a surprise and the pair hadn't told friends or family about it.

Informed that they wouldn't be able to get married without witnesses, the couple approached two uniformed police who were on foot patrol nearby.

The police department says its officers did their duty and the couple were married shortly afterward.
