[June 22, 2011] (AP) A major storm will continue moving through the upper Midwest on Wednesday, providing the most active weather in the country by far.

The associated cold front will move through the Southeast, providing areas of strong showers and thunderstorms from eastern Texas through West Virginia. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe weather in the area in anticipation of strong thunderstorms and possible large hail and damaging winds. While tornadoes are possible, any that do form should be weak in nature.

Rain will fall farther to the north in the upper Midwest, with eastern Wisconsin and Michigan receiving the brunt of the heavy precipitation.

The significant heat wave that has gripped the West will continue Wednesday due to the presence of a strong high pressure system. Temperatures will exceed 100 degrees for many areas of California and the Southwest, with coastal areas even rising into the 70s and 80s. This should be the peak of the heat wave, with temperatures cooling Thursday.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 90s and some 100s. The southern Plains will rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Southwest and California will see similar temperatures. The Northwest will rise into the 80s and some 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at Angel Fire, N.M., to a high of 111 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
