 University spokesman Thomas Hardy said the problem dates back to a
computer system switch in 2003.Hardy says the university will be
liable for the back taxes due to the Internal Revenue Service, but
current graduate assistants will be on the hook for their taxes.
Hardy says the university knows that will create a hardship, but
it's required by law.
A spokeswoman for the Graduate Employees' Organization says the
situation is devastating and some grad assistants won't have any way
to pay rent or buy food next month.
