[March 11, 2011]  SPRINGFIELD -- State Sen. Larry Bomke, R-Springfield, is co-sponsoring a measure that would protect the privacy of gun owners in the state of Illinois.

"It is a matter of public safety that we protect the privacy of FOID card holders," says Bomke. "Releasing the names of FOID card holders is an invasion of their privacy and their safety."

Senate Bill 27, which was introduced by Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, makes it illegal for state and local law enforcement to provide lists of information about Firearm Owner Identification card holders and applicants.

SB 27 addresses concerns that were recently raised following a decision by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan that the names of FOID card holders should be considered public information. The attorney general's decision was a response to Freedom of Information Act request by The Associated Press for information on Illinois' FOID card holders.

Madigan's ruling on the matter has been met with opposition from state law enforcement, lawmakers and FOID card holders. The Illinois State Police had refused to release this information over concerns for public safety and privacy.
