Wanted: Polar Plungers to jump into Lincoln Lakes on March 19

[March 11, 2011]  Be a fan of brrr-avery! More participants are wanted for the noon March 19 Polar Plunge into Lincoln Lakes to benefit Special Olympics athletes.

InsuranceThis Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run event raises funds to support Special Olympics Illinois, Central Area 10, serving four counties in a year-round program of sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Check-in begins at 10 a.m. at The Knights of Columbus Hall in Lincoln. Polar Plunge participants are encouraged to form teams and come in costume. They will be bused to and from the private beach site.

Lunch at The Knights of Columbus Hall will follow the plunge. Lunch is free for those who take the plunge, $6 for others, and $3 for children 12 and under.

All participants in the Polar Plunge are required to collect a minimum of $75 in donations. Each team member must raise the minimum of $75 in donations, and all team members’ individual fundraising totals will be merged to form a combined team total. Statewide, teams are placed into divisions based on size and are awarded prizes for the most money raised.

Each participant receives an official sweatshirt. There are also incentive items for raising more money. Grand prizes include a seven-night trip to Riu Negril in Negril, Jamaica, for two adults, departing from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, provided by Apple Vacations, "America’s Favorite Vacation Company."

Plungers can register at http://polarplunge.org/ and can also create their own fundraising page, or they can register by contacting Joanie Keyes at 217-428-9255. Last-minute participants are welcome to register the morning of the plunge.

Teams that have registered for the Polar Plunge at Lincoln Lakes are the Walmart Sparks, the "Dirty Dogs" from Blue Dog Inn, Larry and Jessica Tuebner, Latham Fire Department, YMCA Daniel Hemenway, and West Lincoln-Broadwell School

On the Lincoln committee are Dan Fulscher, Brenda Short, Roger Matson, Bailey Climer, Ryan Curry, Jim Bode, Jim Comerford and Terry Storer.
