A great crowd filled the arena at Danville Area
Community College for this game. The atmosphere was electric, especially after Louie
Schonauer helped give Lincoln a hot start to the game with two
3-pointers. Erie responded with a couple of their own quick baskets.
After the quick start, scoring became a rarity for both teams for
the next several minutes. Lincoln had a difficult time getting good
looks at the basket against Erie's zone defense. At the eight-minute
mark, Lincoln had a narrow advantage with a 16-14 lead. Shortly
after, Erie took a brief one-point lead, only to be retaken by
Lincoln. Lincoln never trailed in the first half again after this
point.
Lincoln's top scorer, Kiel Turpin, had to spend
significant time on the bench in foul trouble, but Schonauer
knocked down four 3-pointers in the first half to fill the void. Erie also experienced some foul trouble
as their top
scorer, God's Gift Achiuwa, got his third foul in the first
half.
The score was pretty even throughout most of
the first half, but a big 3-pointer by Lincoln's DeMarius Sumrell
sparked a big run for Lincoln in the last two minutes of the half,
giving them a 10-point lead going into the break.
Turpin made up for lost time at the
beginning of the second half with two big dunks, giving Lincoln a big
boost on the offensive end. Erie struggled to score, and to make
matters worse, Achiuwa got his fourth foul with
over 16 minutes to play. Within the next minute, Lincoln extended their
lead to 58-43, causing Erie to call a timeout to figure out a new
plan.
The game turned physical and few points were scored
over the next several minutes.
Lincoln maintained a 15-point lead for the
majority of the second half, but with less than seven minutes to play, Erie cut the lead to 11
points. Immediately after, Lincoln exploded their lead to 20 points
with five minutes remaining. Erie couldn't make any progress on closing
the lead from that point forward.
Lincoln went on to claim the victory by a final
score of 90-72.
