[May 06, 2011]  Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital's sports enhancement programs feature two components for success: a facility with the right equipment and a qualified staff devoted to helping athletes get real performance results.

InsuranceCome see for yourself when SportsCare of ALMH hosts an open house on May 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Athletes are encouraged to bring their tennis shoes and workout clothes so they can put the equipment to the test. (They must have their parent present to do so if they are under the age of 18.)

Complimentary one-on-one nutritional counseling will be available during the event. And Lincoln College basketball coach Kirk Whiteman will offer advice on preseason conditioning. He will kick off the event with his brief presentation at 6:30 p.m.

"Our athletic trainers offer the highest level of individually customized strength and speed conditioning with measurable results," says Todd Mourning, manager of rehabilitation services at ALMH. "It's gratifying for athletes to see the gains they make, and we enjoy helping them enhance skills in a way that also helps reduce the risk of injury."

The Performance Plus program improves an athlete's power, agility, speed and endurance. It uses VertiMax equipment, which is designed to maximize how fast an athlete can generate force. According to the manufacturer's website, VertiMax is in use all over the country by most of the nation's top Division 1 schools and many professional sports teams. Super Bowl champions and collegiate programs ranked in the top 25 are training with this type of light-load, high-speed work.

"Our custom-designed programs need just one more element to succeed -- athletes who are ready to take their game to the next level," says Joe Santillo, a certified athletic trainer and performance enhancement specialist at ALMH SportsCare. "Our new VertiMax equipment focuses on explosive lower-body reactive power, which is a critical component to being a superior athlete."

In addition to sports enhancement programs, ALMH offers injury and concussion prevention programs. Training and testing can help athletes avoid serious injuries that push them to the sidelines.

"ALMH and SportsCare offer all the resources athletes at any level and age need to improve their game," says Missy Aper, who is also a certified athletic trainer and performance enhancement specialist at ALMH SportsCare. "In the competitive world of high school and college sports, these programs are proven to give athletes the edge."

Gatorade and cookies will be served during the open house. A limited number of SportsCare T-shirts will also be given away.

ALMH SportsCare is an educational and outreach program that teaches athletes and active kids in the community how to exercise, stretch and treat their bodies in order to enhance performance and prevent injuries. SportsCare athletic training offered through ALMH is available at Lincoln College, Lincoln Community High School, and local elementary and middle schools. For more information, call 605-5500.
