[May 19, 2011] (AP) Wet weather activity will continue in the northeastern quadrant of the nation Thursday as a weakening low pressure system remains the dominant weather feature of the region.

Wraparound winds associated with this low will usher more moisture from the Atlantic into the Mid-Atlantic and New England states. This will aid in producing rain showers with periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day. Expect flood watches and flood warnings to persist in areas of the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic due to persistent precipitation. Additional on-and-off showers with thunderstorms will be possible in parts of the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley.

In the West, a strong storm system over the central Great Basin will stir up more showers, thunderstorms and high-elevation snow from parts of Nevada through the central Rockies and into the Plains. Winds circulating around this system will draw moisture from the Gulf of Mexico northward, sparking rain and thunderstorms from the southern Plains into the north-central Plains and the mid-Mississippi Valley. Increased instability in parts of the central and southern Plains will create chances of severe weather with damaging wind, hail and tornadoes.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a morning low of 19 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 97 degrees at Vernon, Texas.
