[November 01, 2011]  Four Lincoln area thrift stores are partnering for a Christmas event. From Nov. 18 through Dec. 10, customers can visit the Mission Mart, Pink Shutter, New Beginnings and Goodwill thrift stores and receive a punch card. Shoppers can take the card to each participating store and receive a punch. At the fourth store, all completed cards will be entered in a drawing to win a $10 gift certificate for each store.

The four stores are also competing for the best Christmas window display. Shoppers can vote for their favorite display at each store.

Carol Wilson, manager of the Lincoln Mission Mart, said the group got together this summer and decided to work together to attract shoppers to their stores. "We are all in the same business and all have a common mission of helping people, so we thought, why not help one another with information and resources at the same time," she said.

The group created an informational brochure, which is available at all stores and lists all the thrift stores in the area along with a coupon for 10 percent off. The brochure features a quote by Abraham Lincoln: "You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift."

Wilson said that first partnership was a big success. "We hope more people will hear about this and come check out the great thrift store scene happening in Lincoln," she said.

The Lincoln Mission Mart is also having a Thanksgiving food fundraiser for Home Sweet Home Ministries, the homeless shelter they support in Bloomington. Customers can buy a paper turkey for $2 and have their name written on the turkey and hung on the wall. All of the funds collected will help the shelter feed hundreds of low-income and homeless people the week of Thanksgiving. The store notes they are also competing with their Bloomington counterpart to see which store can raise the most funds for the shelter's Thanksgiving meal. The winning store will be treated to a pizza party.
