[November 02, 2011]  The eighth-grade Lady Wolverine basketball team continued their winning ways by winning the county tournament last night by defeating Zion 23-18. Both teams played tenacious defense and it was a true battle to the buzzer.

The Wolverines started the road to the championship game by defeating Mount Pulaski 38-23 on Saturday. Brook Soebbing led the Lady Wolverines in scoring with 12 points while Kate Benner added six and Emily Martinez added five. Lily Pickett led Mount Pulaski in scoring with 12 and Rentmeister added nine. The Lady Wolverines were led in rebounding by Soebbing with 12 boards and Benner with nine. Soebbing also led in steals with five and Kaylyn Hoffert had four.

The eighth-grade Lady Wolverine team was ready to make their mark in school history yet again. Last year this team won their first-ever regional title, and this year one of their goals was to win county, which has not been done by a Lady Wolverine basketball team since 2001.

The Lady Wolverines started out slowly but pulled their game together after the half to defeat Zion Lutheran by a score of 23-18. Brook Soebbing led all scoring with nine points while Kaylyn Hoffert added six and Kate Benner four for the Lady Wolverines. Rachel Lockenner and Lexi Groves each had six points to lead the Zion Lutheran team. As for rebounding, Benner pulled down 11 boards as well as four steals. Hoffert added eight steals and Kaelyn Froebe had four.

With this win the eighth-grade Lady Wolverines improve their record to 11-3 on the season.

Both the seventh- and eighth-grade teams will be back at it on Wednesday against Springfield Little Flower.

The Lady Wolverine basketball team is also hosting a "Pack the Place Night" on Nov. 14 against Bloomington Cornerstone. Come out and support your Lady Wolverine basketball teams. Games start at 6 p.m.
