[November 07, 2011] (AP) Active weather will continue in parts of the West on Monday as a storm system passes quickly through the Great Basin.

The system will maintain a mix of rain and high-elevation snow showers in the Great Basin and Southwest through the afternoon. Storm total snowfall is expected to range up to 6 to 12 inches through Monday, with higher totals in the higher elevations. Snow will move into parts of the southern and central Rockies by Monday evening. Behind this system, high pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest and California with drier weather conditions.

To the east, a cold front associated with a low pressure system lifting northeastward through Ontario, Canada will become stationary as it extends from the upper Great Lakes through the southern Plains. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will pool near this front, triggering light to moderate showers and thunderstorms ahead of the system from the southern Plains through the Ohio Valley. There is a slight risk of severe weather development in the southern Plains Monday afternoon and night. Large hail, damaging winds, tornadoes and even a strong tornado will be possible.

Elsewhere, high pressure will provide generally calm, dry and mild conditions to much of the Eastern Seaboard. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a morning low of minus 6 degrees at Butte, Mont., to a high of 88 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
