On Saturday, the Lynx traveled to Kansas City to play MCC Maple
Woods and won 2-1. It was a tough match played in windy conditions
on a small field against a very good team. The Lynx are used to
playing on a full-sized, 120-by-80 field, and the MCC Maple Woods
field was 110 by 65. This size field didn't let allow the Lynx to
use their team speed and ability to get behind the opponent in the
way they usually play.
The Lynx won the toss and got the wind, which was around 15-20
mph. They had the ball in the majority of the first half and had
several really good chances, but the MCC Maple Woods keeper made
great saves. The first goal came on a free kick from about 22 yards
out that Anders Fegri bent around the wall and the keeper wasn't
able to hold on to the ball.
The halftime score was 1-0 Lincoln.
Lincoln comments on the second half:
"We knew they would bring a lot of numbers forward, and with the
wind in our faces, it was going to be a very tough 45 minutes in the
second half. We sat back a little more than usual and played
counterattack soccer. It paid off with about 18 minutes left in the
match when Ruben Gaytan found himself one-on-one with their last
defender, where he headed it past him, and Julio Velasquez was able
to run around the defender and slot the ball far post. With the
cushion of a two-goal lead, the Lynx felt they could hold them off
and finish the game with a win.

"However, MCC was able to keep the pressure on and earned a
penalty kick with 10 minutes left. From our angle, our defender
clearly got the ball and felt it was a bad call for a PK, but at the
end of the day we have to deal with it. Maple Woods converted on the
penalty and put the pressure on for the last few minutes, but the
Lynx were able to hold them off and get the win."
Lincoln travels to Phoenix, Ariz., for the national tournament
Nov. 17-20. The seeding was to take place Monday.
