[November 07, 2011]  For over 40 years the local Zonta club has hosted a dinner in early November, with proceeds being used for service projects.

The event is the organization's main fundraiser for the year. This year's meal, served on Sunday, was another success. One officer credits partnerships with other groups and their cooperation as a main factor in that success.

"The Lincoln students from the National Honor Society are gracious in their assistance," said Becky Werth, Zonta president. "They are a great group to work with, and we couldn't get it done without them. There were about 30 of them -- serving beverages, cleaning up, carrying trays to the tables.

"Also, the high school kitchen staff cooks the turkey roasts on Friday, and our group works on the dressing, vegetables and sides on Saturday and early Sunday morning. It is definitely a partnership between all of them and us," Werth said.

"We have 32 members now, but we could never do this by ourselves, and we appreciate everything they do to make this happen."

Over 1,000 tickets were sold to this year's Zonta dinner, with 450 carryouts. The turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and green beans were accompanied by applesauce and cranberry sauce. A wide selection of desserts was also part of the meal -- well worth the $10 ticket, especially because a major portion of the ticket price will go for a good cause.

What is Zonta's cause? The local club offers three or four scholarships every year and contributes to the international organization, which supports and advocates for women's legal, political, economic and educational equality around the world. The organization's mission advocates for human rights, fundamental freedom and peace. The international partnerships of members support the needs and rights of women in countries where they struggle to have a voice and to attain social status.

The Zonta dinner on Sunday was served in the cafeteria at Lincoln Community High School. Becky Werth, who has been a Zonta member for 37 years, remembers the first dinners were at the Elks, when the organization was still located on the Lincoln square. Later the dinner events were moved to Carroll Catholic School for several years. This was the 20th year the event was at LCHS.
