LCU starts off 1-1 in national tournament

[November 11, 2011]  KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Lincoln Christian University Red Lions went 1-1 at the NCCAA Division II national tournament on Thursday. After upsetting No. 3 Kentucky Christian University 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-5), the No. 6 Red Lions were unable to beat No. 2 Maranatha Baptist Bible College (13-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-27, 12-15).

Seniors Jamie McFadden and Lydia Bunting had standout performances in the opening match against KCU. Bunting served up a season-high 58 assists, while McFadden pounded out 25 kills and recorded 12 digs. Freshman Emma Donnelly led defensively with 17 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Red Lions took a 2-1 lead over Maranatha, then lost a close 25-27 game in the fourth set, which would eventually lead to the loss of the match. Bunting spread the ball around evenly to her attackers McFadden, Emily Sheley and Alicia Carson, who recorded 55 kills altogether. Donnelly recorded 28 digs during the match.

LCU plays two more matches Friday, against No. 7 Philadelphia Biblical Christian College and No. 10 Florida Christian College. With wins in both matches, the Red Lions are likely to move on to the Final Four on Saturday.
