Emden Grade School salutes veterans

November 11, 2011 Mrs. Willmert and her fourth-grade students at Emden Grade School planned and organized an observance Thursday in honor of veterans. This is the sixth year for the program at the school.

The entire student body sang "God Bless America" to the veterans and audience members. They were accompanied by Lee Greenwood's version of the patriotic song.

Wayne and Marlene Schrader accepted a check for $60 from the students, on behalf of veterans at the VA hospital in Danville. The Schraders volunteer at the hospital.

Ray Wiedle, of Land of Lincoln Honor Flight, thanked the students for a $172 check that will help to cover expenses in sending a veteran to visit memorials in Washington, D.C.

Twenty-four Hartsburg-Emden area veterans attended the special program in their honor at Emden Grade School on Thursday.

 

Veterans attending the special program represented the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and National Guard.
 

 

Nine WWII veterans were honored at the veterans program. They included Virgil Leesman, Weldon Eaton, Don McAfee, Orvil Shaffer, Wendell Cross, Roy Redding and John Dust.
