The nation's weather

[November 15, 2011] (AP) A strong cold front will continue moving through the eastern third of the country on Tuesday, providing the country's most active weather.

The most intense weather is expected to develop in the lower Mississippi Valley where strong thunderstorms may become severe. There is a moderate risk of severe weather in Louisiana and surrounding states, so residents should monitor local weather conditions and be prepared to take necessary steps to protect life and property. Some of the severe weather may include severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Farther to the north, the cold front will provide moderate rain from the Tennessee Valley through the Northeast. As the front moves off the coast throughout the day, rain will decrease.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system will move into the northern Plains, providing some snow showers from the Dakotas through Wisconsin. These snow showers will not be heavy in nature, but the cold air streaming into the region will only reinforce the cooler-than-normal temperatures that have been over the area for the past few days.

Also, rain and high-elevation snow are possible in the Northwest, including the Cascades.

The Northeast will rise into the 50s and 60s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The northern Plains will rise into the 20s and 30s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The Northwest will rise into the 30s and 40s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a morning low of 14 degrees at Pinedale, Wyo., to a high of 88 degrees at Edinburg, Texas.
