Ross Thomas (foreground) helped his son, Jonathan, organize the battle of the bands and wants to see it expand to include more area musicians and to raise funds for local and worldwide causes.

Jonathan Thomas and his sister, Maddie, took care of the kitchen for the evening. Maddie is a freshman at Hartem High School. She is also an up-and-coming singer.

Jonathan Thomas, José Perez and Nathan Gerard make up the band Love/Lust.

During the warm-up, Michael Allen  took the stage and worked the room with several solos. The nonprofessional musicians sounded anything but amateur.

A mean game of Sorry kept musicians amused while they listened to the bands. Kevin Bolton and Devon Stribling (left) and Drew Stribling and Jacob Irons (right) carry their game along with their instruments.

Red 5 band members Daniel Maxson, Mason City, on guitar; Tommy Hilton, lead, Mason City; and Troy Teaney, drums, Hartsburg. Teaney also plays with two Christian rock bands and with Vintage Daze.

Partway through the evening, Maddie Thomas stepped out from behind the concession stand to share the spotlight with her brother, Jonathan.
