[November 16, 2011] (AP) The front that brought severe weather to the southern Plains and wet weather to the Mid-Atlantic and Tennessee Valley will remain nearly stationary through Wednesday morning.

Thus, expect precipitation to persist along and ahead of the frontal system. Behind this frontal boundary, a stronger cold front extending from the Great Lakes through the central Plains will advance southeast and replace this stationary front Wednesday morning, ushering in much colder air and producing more active weather. A slight risk of severe thunderstorms is expected across parts of the eastern Gulf and south Atlantic coast states. The main threat will be isolated tornadoes and damaging wind gusts. Expect the precipitation coverage to extend into southern New England Wednesday morning and continue into early Thursday. This cold front will then push offshore Thursday, resulting in diminishing precipitation across the East Coast.

Out West, a strong storm system will begin to influence the Pacific Northwest by Wednesday morning. The associated warm front will approach the West Coast early Wednesday and support light to moderate rain and mountain snow over the Pacific Northwest. Precipitation intensity will increase throughout the day as the cold front approaches. Moderate to heavy snow will begin to fall over the Cascades and northern Rockies by Wednesday evening. The heaviest total snow accumulations from the storm are forecast in the Washington Cascades. Precipitation is expected to spread eastward into northern Intermountain West by Wednesday night.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 10 degrees at Cut Bank, Mont., to a high of 91 degrees at New Braunfels, Texas.
