[November 19, 2011]  MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- It's official: the company that results from the merger of Green Mountain Power Corp. and Central Vermont Public Service Corp. is to be called Green Mountain Power, but three sub-bands will keep the names they had under CVPS.

Green Mountain Power's owner, Montreal-based Gaz Metro, struck a deal to buy the Rutland-based CVPS earlier this year. The newly combined company will control 70 percent of Vermont's retail power market.

The combined company will keep the well-known CVPS Cow Power program, which makes electricity from farm methane. It will also keep the CVPS SmartPower brand name for its new digital system for communicating with customer electric meters, and the CVPS plug 'n go program for hybrid-electric vehicles.

Closing of the merger is expected next spring.
