Police: 1 killer responsible for NY beach deaths

[November 30, 2011]  NEW YORK (AP) -- Police investigating the discoveries of 10 sets of human remains on New York's Long Island say they believe it's the work of a serial killer instead of multiple killers.

Suffolk County police Commissioner Richard Dormer says in an interview posted on Newsday's website Tuesday (http://bit.ly/rOj1NB) the fact that all the victims may be linked to the sex trade backs the single-killer theory.

The remains were found strewn along a remote beach parkway and elsewhere. Police have identified only five of the 10 victims. Those five were women working as escorts.

The investigation began as a hunt for missing New Jersey prostitute Shannan Gilbert, last seen a year ago. She hasn't been found. Dormer says detectives don't think her case is connected.
