[October 01, 2011]  (AP)  The eastern U.S. was expected to see another wet day on Saturday as a pesky low pressure system hovers over the Northeast. The system will slightly advance eastward from the Great Lakes and was expected to continue triggering widespread scattered showers over the lower Great Lakes and Northeast from Michigan and Ohio to Maine.

While the region has seen rain showers for several days in a row now, this area was expected to continue to see problems with flooding. However, rainfall totals were expected to be significantly lower than the past few days, with total accumulation less --  around an inch.

Behind this system in the Plains, a ridge of high pressure was expected to advance off the Rocky Mountains and into the Plains. This ridge was expected to cover most of the central U.S., stretching from central Canada to the southern Plains, producing a warm and sunny day. The leading edge of this system was expected to bring cool and chilly conditions to the upper Midwest, due to strong flow from Canada. A frost advisory has been issued for the region as overnight lows were expected to dip into the mid-30s, and daytime highs were expected to range in the 50s and lower 60s.

Out West, a trough of low pressure just offshore was expected to advance over the West Coast. A front associated with the system was expected to kick up scattered showers over the Pacific Northwest, with only cloudy skies and a few sprinkles anticipated in northern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of 24 degrees at Angel Fire, N.M., to a high of 100 degrees at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airpo, Ariz.
