[October 04, 2011]  (AP)  Two storms will bookend the country on Tuesday. The first storm will rotate just off the Northeast coast, providing mainly rain showers through the region. This storm will actually strengthen as it moves northeastward away from the coast, but the main effect of this strengthening will be the strong winds that will whip through the Northeast.

HardwareThe second storm will approach the West Coast in the afternoon and evening. This storm will be significantly strong for this time of year, spreading rain and even some high-elevation snow from Northern California through Washington. The brunt of the storm will actually be saved for Wednesday as heavy rain and some high-elevation snow will fall in California.

Meanwhile, a high pressure system in the Mississippi Valley will provide dry conditions through the eastern third of the country aside from the Northeast. Warm air streaming along the west side of this high will keep temperatures pleasant to warm in the Plains.

The Northeast will rise into the 50s and 60s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The Plains will rise into the 80s, 90s and 100s, while the Northwest will see temperatures in the 60s and 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a morning low of 28 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 97 degrees at Imperial, Calif.
