[October 10, 2011]  HARTSBURG -- Members of Hartem High School's FFA split into two groups Thursday night and made the rounds in Hartsburg and Emden to collect bags of nonperishable food items for the Lincoln/Logan Food Pantry. It was just one of the many community service projects the organization conducts throughout the school year.

Hardware"I require the FFA members to complete individual community service projects -- one per month -- during the school year," explained Betsy Pech, Hartem's agriculture instructor and FFA sponsor.

"This food drive is one of the few collective service projects, involving all available members," she said, "and one that we do twice each school year -- in the fall and again in April."

An announcement was included in the district's October newsletter, and the communities are alerted in advance to the drive.

Lincoln IGA donated paper grocery sacks, which were tagged with an explanation of the project and left at front doors the day before.

The evening of the pickup, FFA members fanned out and collected sacks of food from front porches. The students took the items back to the high school, where they were sorted, counted and boxed for delivery to the pantry.

Mrs. Pech's husband delivered pizza and soda for supper Thursday evening.
