[October 12, 2011] (AP) The eastern half of the nation will see active weather on Wednesday while the western portion will get improving conditions.

Hardware A front will push through the Mississippi Valley on Wednesday, picking up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico as it moves eastward. The front will produce showers and thunderstorms from Louisiana through Minnesota with some stronger storms with possible hail and high winds around Missouri. Eastern Texas may also see some thunderstorms associated with this front.

In the East, a slow-moving storm off the coast will bring more rain to the Southeast, Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic regions. Rain will be heaviest throughout the central Appalachians, with precipitation tapering off north of New Jersey. New England should remain dry, although dense cloud cover is expected.

In the West, high pressure will build over Southern California, bringing clearing skies and warmer temperatures to the region. Highs along the California coast will begin to rise into the 70s and 80s, while inland locations will hit the 90s. The Northwest will continue to see rain and cloud cover, but precipitation should begin to break overnight, leaving dry conditions by Thursday afternoon.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 24 degrees at Monarch Pass, Colo., to a high of 93 degrees at Hoover and Diana, Texas.
