Diane Swart cashiered at the Coaches vs. Cancer garage sale on Saturday in the Hartsburg-Emden High School cafeteria. Emden residents Kendra Robison and Nicole Bivens were happy to part with a few dollars in exchange for some good deals.

Mary Conrady and her son Dirk served lunch items during the garage sale, but when shopping was over, it was time to take the store apart. Volunteers made quick work of packing stacks of clothes into saved boxes and gathering the household goods and breakables into newspaper.

Michelle Eyrse coached players as they aimed and threw footballs through the targets at the football toss game. Braden Rohlfs played several times and won several prizes for his efforts.

Emden Grade School celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012. Several special events have been planned for throughout the school year, and a major event is scheduled for February. Last summer a paint crew gave the interior a new look, including a focus color chosen by each teacher for their classroom.
