[October 18, 2011]  Lincoln Daily News received the following statement Tuesday for publication:

Dear Editor:

We fully recognize that the people of Lincoln and the greater Logan County community look to Family Medical Center of Lincoln to provide safe, high-quality care and to exercise concern for our community, our patients, our employees and our physicians. We understand this responsibility and embrace this obligation. We are grateful to hold the community's trust, knowing that it requires us to keep our community -- especially our patients -- informed and to be a reliable source of health-related information.

Some matters, however, must be treated confidentially, and the issues surrounding Steven Kottemann, M.D., and his medical practice with Family Medical Center of Lincoln are such an instance. We believe all in our community will respect that, because privacy and confidentiality are elements of many workplaces and activities.

Some in the community have recently alleged that Dr. Kottemann is somehow being treated unfairly at Family Medical Center of Lincoln. Because this "public relations" campaign is not based on all of the facts, it is very one-sided. For now, it must remain so, as physicians and staff of Family Medical Center of Lincoln and Memorial Health System will honor our confidentiality obligation.

Recognizing the nature of this situation, we want to assure all of several very important facts:

First, and most important, the current issues surrounding Dr. Kottemann should not cause you to question the safe, high-quality care you have received at the Family Medical Center of Lincoln, or any other Memorial Health System facilities, in the past or that you will receive in the future.

Second, despite all of the negative and inaccurate information being disseminated about us, Family Medical Center of Lincoln and Memorial Health System will continue to serve the community in line with our mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve. We will never compromise our focus on safe, high-quality patient care.

Finally, regarding concerns for Dr. Kottemann, please be assured that medical and administrative leadership of Family Medical Center of Lincoln and Memorial Health System have devoted many hours to this matter. None of us takes this responsibility lightly. We have acted in good faith and in accordance with our procedures. We will continue to do so.

For additional perspective on this matter, you may view some additional comments from me on behalf of Family Medical Center of Lincoln. You can access my message at http://ow.ly/6ZxeO.

Sincerely,

Paul Kasa, M.D.
Medical Director, Family Medical Center of Lincoln
