[October 19, 2011]  TOLEDO -- Ben Tire/Neal Tire stores are hosting a food drive though the month of October to help stock the shelves of local food pantries. All 28 Ben Tire/Neal Tire locations in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky are participating in this effort. Anyone who brings in two or more nonperishable food items for the drive can receive a $14 oil change.

"When the job market is strained, more people need help from week to week to feed their families. Many of our communities are having a tough time keeping the shelves stocked at food pantries, and we’re doing what we can to help," said Scott Carlon, director of marketing.

Donations will be accepted though Oct. 31 at all Ben Tire/Neal Tire locations during normal business hours. Acceptable items include canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, canned and boxed meals, canned or dried beans, pasta, rice and cereal.

To guarantee food safety, items that will not be accepted include: rusty or unlabeled cans, perishable items, noncommercial canned items, noncommercial packaged items and opened or used cans.

"This effort is about helping to sustain the health and welfare of local communities," Carlon added. "We encourage people to donate healthy and nutritious food items that have been recently purchased -- items you would give a friend or a family member in need."
