[October 19, 2011] (AP) More wet weather is in store for the eastern U.S. on Wednesday as the large low pressure system over the Ohio and Tennessee valleys continues to strengthen and draw more moisture into the region. Precipitation is expected from the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Tennessee valleys eastward across the East Coast.

Strong moist flow will stream westward across the Mid-Atlantic and New England, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms especially over the coastal region. Apart from the precipitation, the associated cold front is expected to sweep through the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, ushering in much colder air with periods of gusty winds. This cold surge is expected to extend from the upper Midwest and northern Plains down to the Tennessee Valley and Gulf states. Temperatures are expected to drop 10 to 15 degrees below average Wednesday.

Out West, a broad ridge of high pressure will continue to bring fair weather conditions across the inland areas. For the California coast, low clouds and fog will return, bringing a chance of drizzle to the immediate coast. Farther north, a cold front is expected to drop southeast across western Washington on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with accompanying light showers and rain.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 18 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 98 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.
