Ill. lawmakers gear up for busy fall veto session

[October 25, 2011]  CHICAGO (AP) -- It will be all about arithmetic when Illinois lawmakers go back to work for an ambitious fall veto session.

The session starts today (Tuesday).

Lawmakers will be counting votes to see if they can override Gov. Pat Quinn's threatened veto of gambling expansion and resurrect other legislation he vetoed to modernize the state's power grid. They'll crunch numbers to fill budget holes to possibly avoid closing state facilities and to pay regional school officials. And they'll do the math on proposed tax breaks for Chicago's two major financial exchanges to keep them in Illinois.

Some of the biggest fireworks could come over gambling expansion, where Quinn is at odds with lawmakers over a key provision to allow slots at tracks. The push, however, could fizzle without enough support to overcome Quinn.
