Sandburg (27-10) had beaten Lincoln in straight sets a little over a
month ago, and they appeared to be on their way to a similar result
after taking the first two sets from LC by scores of 25-16 and
25-14. However, the Lady Lynx fought back in set three to win 25-21.
In set four, neither team could build more than a two-point lead,
until Lincoln was able to go up 11-8. They extended the lead to 12-8
after libero Megan Tompkins chased down a ball that was nearly over
the Lincoln bench. The save set up a kill by sophomore right-side
hitter Courtney Reinken. LC would use the momentum boost to go on
and take the set 25-16 and force a fifth set.
In the deciding set to 15, it again looked like CSC would take
the match, as they jumped out to a 10-5 lead. After an LC timeout,
freshman middle hitter Beth Daniels put down a kill to give LC the
side-out. LC then scored five straight behind the serving of
sophomore setter Kristen Wright. Sandburg sided out to tie the set
at 11, and after several hard-fought rallies, scored three in a row
to reach set and match point at 14-11. A Sandburg hitting error
gave LC another chance, and freshman outside hitter Jenna Merkel
made the most of it, serving three points to give LC a 15-14
advantage. The Chargers managed a side-out to tie the score at 15,
but a kill by sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Rhoades put LC up by
one, and a tip kill by freshman Kelly Anderson completed the
comeback with a thrilling 17-15 set and match victory.
With the win, LC moves to 20-10 on the year.

LC coach Mark Tippett commented:
"What an incredibly entertaining match this turned out to be. It
is rare that a team can come back from being down two sets to none
and win, but our team showed that they had the heart and
determination to do just that tonight.
"Sandburg is the top seed in their region, and they have some
excellent athletes on their team. In the first two sets they were
faster and more consistent than we were. But in set three our
passing improved, which gave us a chance to control the volley off
of serve and avoid giving up runs of points. Once we started
blocking better and hustling a bit more on defense, we began to play
with more confidence.
"The comeback in set five took a tremendous effort. I am very
proud of the way we played tonight, and our players should be proud
of themselves for stepping up to the challenge and playing some
great volleyball."
Schedule update: Lincoln had been scheduled to play a triangular
on Saturday, but Waubonsee CC canceled. Therefore, Lincoln will play
one match on Saturday against Sauk Valley CC at 1 p.m. Prior to the
match, LC will recognize its sophomore players and their families.
