Lincoln
College unveiled the "Lynx Coffee Den" when the fall
semester began on Aug. 22. Located in the Meyer-Evans Student Center
along Ottawa Street, the new addition has been serving a variety of
coffees, smoothies and teas to the students, faculty and staff
members. The Den is the highlight of multiple renovations to the
student center, which was built in 1990.
"The objective of this renovation was to create a fresh
atmosphere in the student center," said Anthony Cardenas, Lincoln
College's vice president of enrollment management and student
services. "Our student center is a place where current relationships
are strengthened and new friendships are formed. The Den is
certainly a focal point of this renovation."
The Den's drinks are allowed to be purchased outside of the
college's meal plan, which is intended to entice more commuter
students, faculty members and staff members to visit the student
center on a regular basis.
Smoothies are the most expensive item on the menu, with a price
of $3. Coffee can be purchased for as cheap as $1.50, while tea is
available for $1.
"At other universities, coffee shops and smoothie shops have
proven to be successful in accommodating all members of a campus
community, from the most senior members of the faculty to the
freshmen class," said Cardenas. "Lots of people like coffee, lots of
people like smoothies and lots of people like tea. We are hopeful
that the Den will be a campus hot spot where everyone can enjoy
good, mostly healthy drinks at an affordable price."
Students, faculty members, housing officials and the admissions
office each had input in the planning process, which began last
spring.

"The vast majority of the work was completed over the summer by
our in-house staff," said Ronda Piatt, the college's director of
building and grounds. "We looked at other universities, such as the
University of Illinois Springfield and Lincoln Christian University,
as models. We formed multiple committees throughout the planning
process, and we had some great contributions from everyone
involved."
Some of the other recently completed renovations to Meyer-Evans
are a new shade of paint on the walls, new furniture and additional
television sets.
"It was a major project," said Piatt. "We have more things we'd
like to do in the future as our budget allows. But this is a great
first step.
"I absolutely love what we've done so far. I'm very proud of it."
