The Illinois 4-H Foundation raises private funds that are
invested in the Illinois 4-H program, which is one of the largest
youth development programs in the state. There are 270,000 Illinois
youth, ages 5-19, participating in 4-H with the guidance of 24,000
youth and adult volunteers. Youth learn leadership, citizenship and
life skills through more than 250 projects.
Learning opportunities in 4-H are intentionally designed around
four essential elements necessary for positive youth development by
providing youth with supervised independence, a sense of belonging
with a positive group, a spirit of generosity toward others and a
wide variety of opportunities to master life challenges. The
fundamental 4-H ideal of practical "learn by doing" experiences
encourages youth to experiment, innovate and think independently.
There are 4-H programs offered in every county in Illinois
through chartered clubs, school-based programs, camp settings and
U.S. military installations.
Illinois 4-H is part of the University of Illinois Extension
program that is offered in concert with the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign campus, the Federal Extension Service and the
United States Department of Agriculture.
