Chevron, California settle on gas tank allegations

[September 08, 2011]  SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- San Ramon-based Chevron and California officials have reached a $24.5 million settlement over allegations that the oil giant violated state laws by failing to properly inspect and maintain underground gas tanks.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris says since 1998 Chevron U.S.A. Inc. and Chevron Stations Inc. violated anti-pollution laws by tampering with or disabling leak detection devices.

Harris says the company also failed to test secondary containment systems, conduct monthly inspections, train employees and maintain alarm systems at gas stations in 32 counties across California.

Officials at Chevron did not return a call late Wednesday from The Associated Press seeking comment.

A judge must still approve the settlement. A hearing is set for Sept. 29 in Alameda County Superior Court.
