The hospital's board has approved a legal transfer of the east
parking lot along Eighth Street and another nearby tract of land to
the church. Previously, the church leased a portion of the
property for a very small amount from ALMH in order to install a
garage for bus parking and storage. In February, the church
approached the hospital about purchasing that and another tract to
help meet its needs.
"We wondered what would happen to this property and our building
when the hospital moved," said the Rev. Richard Reinwald, pastor of
St. John Church. "This donation helps us out a lot, and it increases
our parking spaces. The demolition crew left the old parking lot
alone, and it's in good shape."
A brief property deed transfer will take place at the site at
noon Friday.
"The hospital board wanted to do the community-minded thing and
assist this church that has significant meaning to ALMH and its
history," said Dolan Dalpoas, ALMH president and chief executive
officer.
St. John United Church of Christ, located at the corner of
Seventh and Maple streets, helped establish Deaconess Hospital, the
predecessor to ALMH. "Part of this property was part of our initial
gift to the community for a hospital, and a part of it is coming
back. That's the really neat thing about the history," Reinwald
said.
