"The University of Illinois College of Law sincerely regrets the
inaccuracy of our previous posting, and the confusion and concern
that this matter has caused," Urbana-Champaign provost Richard
Wheeler said in a statement. The original data posted showed
students from the Class of 2014 had median test scores of 168 and
median GPAs of 3.81. Corrected, independently verified data released
Monday show median test scores of 163 and GPAs of 3.7.
College of Law admissions dean Paul Pless was placed on leave
earlier this month and an investigation was started into whether the
school previously posted inflated test scores and grades. That
investigation continues, and its findings will be shared when it is
completed, Wheeler said.
The snapshot data of law school students is often used to attract
future students, among other things.
The school removed the data from its website after reports of the
information's inaccuracy were verified. The university then started
an investigation with the help of outside legal counsel and an
independent data analyst. The inaccurate information wasn't reported
to the American Bar Association, the school said, but the university
self-reported the inaccuracies to the ABA.
