How big will Together for Lincoln be?

It depends on us

[September 23, 2011]  Dustin Fulton has notified the media that Together for Lincoln coordinators are now anticipating around 500 volunteers. Fulton said the actual number really depends on who shows up the day of the project. Fulton advised that project volunteers could realistically step it up to 600-700, but he said they won't know till registration.

The numbers are right in line with where they were last year, said Fulton, with an ideal number of 650 or so to ensure project completions. The 650 number would allow all of the projects to have an adequate number of workers, without a lot of people standing around without anything to do.

Together for Lincoln has settled at just above 80 projects from the over 100 submitted. Organizers were unable to fulfill all of them, largely because many of the projects were beyond the scope of a one-day service project. The first couple of years, Fulton said, Together for Lincoln leaders bit off a few projects that were simply too big. While they were able to eventually complete them, organizers realized that they need to make sure they are operating within the scope of a one-day project.

Latham Park will again be central headquarters on the project day. If people want to volunteer and have not yet signed up, they can simply come to the park at 10 a.m. Sunday or anytime following that. Coordinators will assign them to an appropriate project.

If people have already signed up but have not yet heard back from a project leader, they should simply come to the park, and Together for Lincoln staff will let them know which project needs their help. While coordinators try to contact all of the volunteers before the project day, this doesn't always happen. Trying to organize this many volunteers is always a bit of organized chaos, but it winds up working out in the end. Fulton asked for your patience in this, as event planners want it to be a positive experience for everyone.

If someone should complete their project early and would like to help out somewhere else, simply come back to Latham Park and you will be assigned a new project.

The concluding worship service will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Christian University chapel. This year Together for Lincoln will keep it to right at an hour long. It will include a video of the day's projects, singing, prayer and a dramatic re-enactment of Scripture.
