The tournament began on a high note for the Red Lions, with a quick
victory over the Eagles of AIB College of Business from Des Moines,
Iowa. LCU finished in three sets: 25-14, 25-13, 25-21. In a balanced
effort at the net, senior Jamie McFadden, sophomore Emily Sheley and
freshman Alicia Carson each contributed eight kills. Freshman Sammy
Nichols added four kills, and junior Rachel Langseth added another
three. Senior setter Lydia Bunting dished out 31 set assists,
freshman libero Emma Donnelly had 10 digs, and junior Anna DeVillez
owned the service line with six aces out of her 23 serves.
The
second match, against Grace University, proved to be more of a
challenge. The Grace Royals came onto the court fired up, eager to
beat the Red Lions for the first time in their volleyball
history. Dropping the first set 25-15, the Red Lions rallied,
refocused and beat the Royals in the next two sets, 25-20 and
25-22. Heavy hitters Sheley (16 kills), Carson (12 kills) and
McFadden (12 kills) dominated at the net, while Bunting, DeVillez,
McFadden and Nichols had great runs at the service line. Set four
was close all the way, with the Royals finally defeating LCU
25-23. In set five, the Royals took the lead from the beginning and
never let the Red Lions overtake them, winning the set 15-12 and the
match 3-2.

On Saturday, the Red Lions took on the Lady Bears of Barclay
College from Haviland, Kan. This proved to be another easy win --
25-17, 25-7, 25-4 -- allowing them to save their energy for their
second match of the day, with the Mustangs of Mount Mercy University
from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In spite of Donnelly's 24 digs, Bunting's
37 set assists, great serving by Langseth and DeVillez, and numerous
kills by McFadden (14), Sheley (11) and Carson (10), LCU lost the
match to Mount Mercy in four sets: 23-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 23-25.
