[September 28, 2011]  BLOOMINGTON (AP) -- An Illinois woman has been charged with trying to kill her baby by dumping it in a toilet at a homeless shelter.

The McLean County state's attorney's office says 37-year-old Tonya McKee has not yet entered a plea to the charge of attempted murder.

Her public defender, Kim Campbell, says she's not yet familiar enough with the case to comment.

Police say McKee had been living at the Home Sweet Home Ministries shelter in Bloomington for several weeks.

Prosecutors say McKee told other people at the shelter she aborted her baby in a bathroom. Police found it in a toilet.

Officials say the baby was taken to a hospital and survived. More information on the child's condition wasn't available.
