[September 28, 2011]  (AP)  A cut-off low pressure center in the Midwest will continue to weaken Wednesday as it painstakingly drifts east.

The weather in the Midwest will dry out substantially throughout the day, although dense cloud cover will likely stick around through the evening.

As precipitation ends in the Midwest, it will begin to pick up in the Northeast. A line of heavy rain and possibly thunderstorms will push through Pennsylvania and New York in the afternoon and evening.

Some of the rainfall could be quite heavy and more localized flooding is possible for a region that has seen excessive rainfall for over a month. Some of the areas expected to see heavy rain have received over three times their normal amount of rain for September already.

The Mid-Atlantic will also see some heavy rain, mostly in the morning and early afternoon hours, as a front pushes off the coast. The rain will be enhanced by an area of tropical showers and thunderstorms off the coast. This area was once a threat to develop into a tropical cyclone, but the front moving off the coast will end those chances.

In the West, high pressure will continue to build along the Pacific coast, bringing clear skies and warm weather.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a morning low of 26 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 102 degrees at Brady, Texas.
