NKorea says its biggest power station now running

[April 05, 2012]  HUICHON CITY, North Korea (AP) -- North Korea has unveiled one of its biggest construction projects in recent years: a massive power station with two dams that is the nation's largest.

The opening Thursday of the Huichon (HWEE chuhn) Power Station is the first big ceremony in a month of celebrations for the April centenary of the birth of late President Kim Il Sung.

Officials say the power station in Jagang province north of Pyongyang is operational and will be a key source of electricity. Built by soldiers, the power station has two dams and a network of tunnels.

North Korea suffers from an acute power shortage. The Huichon Power Station was a favorite project of the late Kim Jong Il and part of economic goals he set in 2009.
