Monday evening the Civil War Soldier Statue Committee closed another chapter of Logan County history when they laid to rest the remains of the old Civil War soldier statue.

When the statue that stood on the Logan County Courthouse lawn fell to the ground in December 2008, it broke into several pieces, some of them quite large.

A committee was formed and a new statue erected on the same pedestal. Now, a year after that placement, the remains of the old statue have a new permanent home, buried in Postville Park.

The pieces were buried Monday with a brief ceremony conducted by the committee. A headstone-style marker will be placed at the burial site to commemorate the significance of the statue in Logan County history.

Roger Matson welcomed those who were in attendance and asked Paul Gleason to speak on the statue.

Local historian and committee member Gleason spoke about the significance of Postville Park in the history of the Civil War.

Postville Park is under the care of the city of Lincoln. Mayor Keith Snyder was in attendance and was called on to say a few words on behalf of the city.

The committee comes together for a picture to commemorate the event.

In addition to the committee, a small group of folks came to pay their final respects.

Committee member JoAnne Marlin is the first to drop a piece of earth into the grave.

Matson followed suit ...

... as did John Sutton and other committee members.
