Joseph 'Joe' Edwards

[April 27, 2012]  LINCOLN -- Joseph "Joe" L. Edwards, 90, of Lincoln, died Wednesday April 25, 2012, at 6:25 p.m. at St. Clara's Manor.

Lincoln- Joseph "Joe" L. Edwards, 90, of Lincoln, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday April 25, 2012 at St. Clara's Manor, Lincoln.

Joe was born on December 31, 1921 the son of Ernest Leo and Naomi Meyers Edwards, Sr. in Murphysboro, IL. He married Gladys Anderson on May 12, 1947 in Lincoln, IL. She survives in Lincoln. Joe and Gladys would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May 12.

Other survivors include a son: Mike (Diane) Edwards of Lincoln; a daughter: Sheila (Tom) Harmon of Peoria, AZ; a sister: Bonnie (Doc) Welch of Lincoln; three grandchildren: Brett (Brittney) Edwards of Lincoln; Megan (Steven) Jenness of Lincoln; Michael Harmon of Peoria, AZ; and five great grandchildren: Abby, Brooklyn, Grant, Drake, and Griffin. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Elizabeth Edwards, brother: Ernie Edwards, and granddaughter: Erin Edwards.

Funeral Director

Joe operated Edwards City Service Gas Station in Broadwell and then worked at the bottle factory as a fork lift mechanic until retirement in 1982. Joe served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He was a member of the American Legion Post #263 for 64 years and a member of the firing squad for many years; member of forty and eight; Lions Club; and an honorary member of the Rt. 66 Hall of Fame. He was an avid Lincoln Railer and Cardinal Fan.

Services for Joe will be Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln with Rev. Jeffrey Laible officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery with full military rites accorded by the Lincoln American Legion Post #263. Visitation will be Monday, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Carroll Catholic School or the American Legion Post #263.
