The Redbirds had an abbreviated workout Thursday, the final
workout before the team's scrimmage Saturday. Practice started when
players broke up into their individual stations for work with their
position coaches. Following a short 7-on-7 session, the Red and
White teams took opposite sides of the field and worked on packages
for Saturday's scrimmage.
Head coach Brock Spack has enjoyed watching his team progress
throughout the spring.
"I've been happy with the way practice has been going, and the
players have been very workman-like," Spack said. "There has been no
pushback, as far as workload, and whatever we ask them to do, they
do, and I've been impressed with that. That's how it should be, and
it has taken a few years to get to that point, but this team likes to play
football and has made a lot of progress in the spring."
Saturday's activities will begin with the fourth annual Kids
Football Fest, which will take place on the playing field at Hancock
Stadium, weather permitting. The event is open to all Reggie's Kids
Club members ages 12 and under with adult supervision. Those who
aren't members of Reggie's Kids Club can sign up for the free
program at
GoRedbirds.com. Registration opens at 9:45 a.m., with the
program starting promptly at 10:30 a.m. and running until noon. Early
registration is encouraged but not required.
Activities include a catching station with the Redbird quarterbacks,
a field goal station with the Redbird kickers, throwing accuracy,
tackling stations and an obstacle course. In addition, participants
will have the opportunity to dress up like a Redbird football player
and get their picture taken with the ISU cheerleaders.
Fans can then attend the Redbird barbecue, from
noon to 1 p.m., on the grass at the north end of Hancock Stadium.
For $5, a lunch of a hot dog or hamburger (a vegetarian option will
also be available on request), side dish, chips, cookie and a drink
will be served prior to the start of the annual Red-White Scrimmage,
beginning at 1 p.m. This year's game will be broadcast live on WJBC-FM 93.7, with
Dick Luedke and Ted Schmitz on the call. Throughout the game, fans
will have the chance to hear about offseason workouts and newcomers
who have made an impact during spring workouts and also hear from
coach Spack, who will join the broadcast during the fourth quarter.

Here's how this year's Red-White Scrimmage will be played:
-
The Redbirds will be equally divided into two teams (Red and
White). with the first-team offense and second-team defense
making up one team and the second-team offense and first-team
defense comprising the other squad.
-
The game will be played in four, 15-minute quarters with a
running clock and a 10-minute halftime period.
-
There will be no kickoffs, but field position will be
attained by punting and receivers calling for a fair catch.
-
The scrimmage will be "live," meaning everyone is eligible
to be tackled except for the quarterbacks.
-
Extra points and field goals will be kicked by their respective
units when necessary.
-
Points will be tallied at the end of the day, with the team
earning the most points being declared the game's winner.
-
Spack hopes his players wrap up their workout Saturday on a
high note, and most of all, stay healthy heading into the summer.
"More than anything, we want everybody to stay healthy out
there," Spack said. "Other than that, I'd like to see them
compete and have fun and play football. Last year, it went into
overtime, which was a lot of fun. The way we set the scrimmage
up, it should be very competitive like that every year because
it is ones-on-ones and twos-on-twos. It should be a fun day for
them."
