[August 01, 2012]  Chad Baldwin of Lincoln leaves Wednesday for Sacramento, Calif., to race his quarter midget at the Dirt Grand Nationals.

Chad, the 11-year-old son of Mark and Stephanie Baldwin, has been racing since he was 5 years old. He raced the grands last year at Taylorville and won the B class championship, beating out racers from all over the country.

His home track is the Abraham Lincoln Quarter Midget Association raceway at Broadwell.

Chad comes from a racing background. He follows in his mother's steps, as she raced quarter midgets also. He is the grandson of Doug and Sue Newman, and Doug raced go-carts. Chad's great-grandfather Jake Newman raced stock cars, and his other great-grandpa was a drag racer, so racing runs in his blood.

Grandpa Newman bought the cars and maintains them for Chad. His other grandson, Riley Freitag, has also started racing recently

Chad will be racing three classes in California: Light Mod, B and AA, which is the fastest and runs on alcohol.

Chad also plays football and baseball.
