Wednesday
night this was one of the calmest scenes of the evening
as a wall of small children with looks of determination
on their faces marched to the front of the grandstand at
the Logan County Fair. These kids were on a
mission to chase down and take home an animal to show at
next year's 4-H animal exhibits. With the exception
of the chickens for ages 5 and under, animals caught
will be cared for by their captors and brought back to
the fair next year. LDN will have dozens of great
photos of this event in tomorrow's edition.

New
food vendors at the Logan County Fair this year are Tina
Robinson and Brian Neaville of ABC Homemade Ice Cream from Mount
Pulaski. Here the two stand in front of Brian's 1924 John
Deere with a 1.5 horsepower "hit and miss" engine that makes 5 gallons
of ice cream at a time. They feature vanilla, chocolate and
their favorite, strawberry, with real strawberries in it.

Gore Vidal seemed able to do anything
and do it all at the same time. In the early
1960s, you might catch him on a television talk show, read an
essay of his in The Nation about Norman Mailer, see "The Best
Man" on Broadway or watch him campaign for Congress with Eleanor
Roosevelt at his side.
"Nothing is easier nowadays than to get a feeling of being
entirely surrounded by Gore Vidal," Richard H. Rovere wrote for
The New Yorker in 1960.
Vidal died Tuesday at his
home in Los Angeles. He was 86.
