[August 01, 2012]  Last night the crowd began to form at around 6:30 p.m., packing the Logan County Fair grandstand with excitement. It was Tuesday, the opening evening for the fair and time to choose a new queen and "Little Miss."

2011 Logan County Fair Queen Kelsi Ubbenga observed, "There is nothing bigger than the county fair."

This entire week through Sunday, crowds will pack the fairgrounds day and evening for competition and entertainment events, while taking in "fair food" and greeting friends and neighbors. In its 76th year, the fair is annually the biggest social event of local residents in Logan County.

Later in the evening Ubbenga would crown Dani Juilfs as the 2012 Miss Logan County Fair and Karson Mott as Little Miss.

The pageant kicked off with the contestants and Queen Kelsi doing a line dance number to the Lonestar song "Country Fair."

The six contestants vying for the crown must compete in a variety of events that began earlier in the day with an interview by the judges.

During the pageant the young women were asked to give a one-minute speech and then respond to the pop question: What part of today's young generation do you most identify with and why?

Following is a brief summary of each contestant's answer:

  • Dani Juilfs, 19, Lincoln

One-minute speech: When she went to college she did not realize how much she would miss her parents asking her, "Will you be home for dinner?" She now appreciates the special conversations with her biggest fans around the dinner table.

Response to question: Identifies most with how much youth today revolve around technology.

  • Alexandria Haffner, 18, Emden

One-minute speech: She has had to cope with having a hearing deficiency. For example, she was tested later in life and had to learn how not to be embarrassed because of differences, like hearing aids.

Response to question: Identifies most with text messaging because she likes to text, a lot.

  • Audrey Maske, 18, Mount Pulaski

One-minute speech: She was the captain of a male soccer team in high school. She had to overcome differences, and she said to not let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.

Response to question: Identifies most with social networking to stay in contact with friends.

  • Sara Buchanan, 18, Lincoln

One-minute speech: "You only live once" really makes sense to her because of her mother's health issues. She recognizes how much her support team means to her.

Response to question: Identifies most with body image and that we have to love ourselves.

  • Betsy Leesman, 19, Emden

One-minute speech: She spoke about how much she appreciates the love and support of her family, realizing that she will never have to go through things alone because she has her family surrounding her.

Response to question: Identifies most with social networking because she likes to be connected to everyone.

  • Megan Griesheim, 19, Mount Pulaski

One-minute speech: She comes in a small package but brings an extremely outgoing and big personality.

Response to question: Identifies with being interactive and enjoying one thing together.

Judges took a little time to make their decisions. During a pause in the show, visiting queens and Little Misses and past Logan County Fair royalty were introduced.

First runner-up for queen was Audrey Maske. Second runner-up and "crowd's choice" was Sara Buchanan. The award of Miss Congeniality went to Alexandria Haffner.

This is the fourth year for the Little Miss Logan County Fair pageant, and 15 contestants entertained the crowd with their smiles and enthusiasm.

Karson Mott was chosen as the 2012 Little Miss Logan County Fair. First runner-up was Sarah Cross and second runner-up was Chloe Stone. The audience vote for "crowd's choice" was Charlotte LaForge.

The evening concluded with 2011 Miss Logan County Fair Kelsi Ubbenga thanking her support system, the Logan County Fair board and her parents. She expressed how much having the title meant to her and how the Logan County Fair will always be a big event in her heart.
