[August 06, 2012]  Lincoln Daily News is pleased to announce a new addition to the editorial department. Justin Tierney has joined Lincoln Daily News, where he will anchor the sports section.

Tierney, who is employed full-time at Lincoln College as an admissions counselor, will be producing three stories per week for the sports section, starting this fall.

"I'm excited," said Tierney. "I have worked periodically for Lincoln Daily News for the last two years, covering Lincoln Railer football, and it's been an enjoyable experience. I'm looking forward to expanding my role this fall and being a part of Lincoln Daily News as they grow their local sports coverage."

The whole staff at LDN is very excited about Tierney joining efforts to provide the best coverage of local sports in Logan County. He is expanding his previous role to include more county sports coverage, even beyond football, and bringing some new tech to LDN.

Veteran sportscaster Jeff Benjamin also joins the staff again this season to report Railer basketball as only he can bring it.

With Tierney anchoring and Benjamin reporting Railer basketball, we are confident that our readers will have the best sports coverage in Logan County. Tierney and Benjamin are a dream come true!

Tierney's responsibilities will include game coverage, sports feature stories, sports columns and possibly occasional non-sports stories. He is also looking into ways to incorporate social media into his coverage of local sporting events.

Prior to joining the Lincoln College admissions team two years ago, Tierney worked for seven years at The Courier in Lincoln, in both full-time and part-time roles. During his time as the paper's sports editor, Tierney received multiple awards from the Illinois Press Association and Illinois Associated Press Editors Association, including a first-place award for Best Sports Column.

Tierney also received 10 awards from the Illinois College Press Association in two years of competition as a member of the staff of the Elmhurst College student newspaper, The Leader. During his two years at The Leader, Tierney served as sports editor and editor-in-chief. As editor-in-chief of a staff of over 30 editors, writers and graphic artists, Tierney helped lead his college newspaper to a first-place award in General Excellence in the division for small college newspapers.

He is currently working to complete his master's degree in communication from Illinois State University. Tierney's work for Lincoln Daily News will serve as academic credit toward the completion of that degree.

Tierney is looking forward to working as a sports reporter again on a part-time basis.

"Although I don't desire to have a full-time career as a journalist any longer, writing is still one of my passions," said Tierney. "I have especially enjoyed covering athletics in Logan County. I've been able to interact with students and coaches and tell their stories, whether it's the joy of victory, the agony of defeat or something in between.

"I'm sure I'll start off a little bit rusty, but, I'm confident that I can provide good coverage for the readers at LDN. I'm a competitive person, so my goal isn't just to provide coverage; I want to provide the best coverage for local athletes among local media. I hold myself to a high standard in that respect."
