[August 09, 2012]  SPRINGFIELD -- The ever-popular butter cow at the Illinois State Fair will be unveiled by sculptor Sharon BuMann today (Thursday) at 2:30 p.m. in the Dairy Building on the state fairgrounds. Like last year, only a portion of the butter cow will be finished then, allowing fairgoers a chance to watch BuMann complete her sculpture during the beginning of the fair.

The Dairy Building superintendent, Marla Behrends, will emcee the ceremony, and dairy refreshments will be served.

Following the butter cow unveiling will be a ribbon-cutting at the newly-designed Department of Agriculture Tent, located in the Gate 2 area of the fairgrounds. The ribbon-cutting will be at 3:30 p.m.

The new ag tent, sponsored by America's Natural Gas Alliance, has been redesigned by the scenic design department of Millikin University in Decatur. Representatives from both the gas alliance and the university will attend the ceremony.

Present at both ceremonies will be Bob Flider, acting director of agriculture; Amy Bliefnick, state fair manager; and Brittani Schisler, the Illinois county fair queen.

The state fair will run Aug. 9-19.
