Thursday
was supposed to be the day for storms and rain
in Lincoln and Logan County. In the midmorning hours the skies looked as though they
were going to deliver. In town it grew
dark enough that streetlights came on, and to
the north of town, Devin Biggs reported
suspicious-looking cloud formations. In
the end Lincoln received about two-tenths of an
inch of rain, and the severe storms along with
damage and heavy rains moved to the east, north
and south.

In
this photo taken Tuesday, flames surround
a house on a hillside above Bettas Road near Cle Elum,
Wash. A spokesman for the Washington state Department of
Natural Resources said the house survived the fire
because of the defensible space around the structure
with the placement of the driveway and the lack of trees
and brush up against the house, preventing flames from
reaching it. Firefighters are still working to control
the Bridge Taylor Fire and said that it's 25 percent
contained.

Kukuck, of Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, is taking out
the lavender bushes for the season. The hot, dry weather had it
blooming and

beautiful, with a wonderful sweet scent.

Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science shows Pablo
Picasso's "Seated Woman with Red Hat" ("Femme assise au chapeau
rouge").
The Evansville Museum plans to sell the
layered, fired-glass piece because it is too
expensive to keep. It is not known how much it is worth. The
glass art was kept in storage nearly 50 years and was only recently discovered
to be a genuine Picasso.

Twelve-year-old
Elijah Earnheart, left, looks on as his mom, Cindy Earnheart, takes a phone call
from his football coach outside his home in Mesquite, Texas, on Thursday. The 6-foot, 300-pound 12-year-old has been ruled ineligible to play Pee
Wee football in the Dallas area. Despite being a young seventh-grader, officials
say he is more than twice the maximum allowable Pee Wee weight of 135 pounds.
