The first seminar will be for emergency medical technicians and is
titled "EMS Special Considerations for People with Disabilities."
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the seminar begins at 9 a.m.
in the hospital's Wedeberg Conference Center. The session will
help EMTs identify and handle the special conditions for people with
spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, stroke and
developmental delays. The session will also include a real-life
trauma story from EMT pickup through hospitalization and
rehabilitation to home.
The speakers are three members of Memorial's spinal cord injury
team: Dawn Lucasey, program coordinator and physical therapist;
Mandi Carver, occupational therapist; and Heidi Banicki, speech
therapist.
The second seminar will be for people with disabilities and is
titled "Being Prepared, No Matter What." Registration begins at 9
a.m., and the session begins at 10 a.m. in the Wedeberg Conference
Center.
The session will focus on how people with disabilities can be
prepared for emergency disaster situations and everyday emergency
situations in their homes and vehicles.

The speakers are Steve Iden, an attorney with the Land of Lincoln
Legal Assistance Foundation, and Fran Lehnert, a registered nurse
and disaster health service manager for the American Red Cross.
Both sessions will conclude with a complimentary lunch at noon.
Participants from both groups will eat together to allow emergency
personnel to answer questions and discuss specific needs that people
with disabilities may have during emergency response situations.
